About The Shisumangal
This centre, a branch of the Ramakrishna Order, follows the ideal and principles of Sri Ramakrishna - "Service to Jiva is Service to Shiva" (One who serves man serves God indeed). Since its humble beginning in 1932 as a maternity hospital, this centre has grown into a 626 beded with multi-discipline, is situated in Kolkata, capital of West Bengal. This centre is providing health care at an affordable price to socio-economically weaker, under-priviledged and needy patients.
The Hospital has the following departments:-General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatric Medicine, Ophthalmology, E.N.T., Dentistry / Maxillofacial Surgery, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Neurology, Paediatirc Sugery and etc. It also has special clinics for Anaesthesiology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Hearing and Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Postpartum (Family Welfare), Immunization, Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery, Breast Clinic, Pain Clinic and Haematology. The diagnostic requirements of these departments are met by the departments of Radiodiagnosis, Histopathology with Cytology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank with Components.
Mobile Medical Van is plying in three areas throughout the week to serve both urban and rural patients under Community Health Service.

Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS)
The Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences was recognised by the University of Calcutta for post-graduate training and research in medicine in 1963, the year of Swami Vivekananda's Birth Centenary. Presently it is affiliated under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences for its Postgraduate Degree, Diploma and various paramedical courses. The Medical Council of India which recognised the Seva Pratishthan in 1966 for compulsory rotatory training of fresh medical graduates, also recognised it in 1979 for Post Graduate Degree courses. The National Board of Examinations, New Delhi also recognised this institution for DNB courses in various disciplines from 1994. The Institute also has been recognised by the University Grants Commission since 1987. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recognises it as a research centre.

VIMS: Courses
The Academic activities of the Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences were guided by an Academic Council upto 1981-82. Since 1982-83 a Governing Body is looking after the affairs of Post Graduate Medical College.
Courses Conducted
The Institute has the disciplines in M.D (Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Pathology) and M.S (General Surgery, Orthopedics,Obs & Gyn. Opthalmology, ENT) recognized by West Bengal University of Health Sciences. It also has disciplines in D.C.H, DGO., D.O, D.L.O.
A number of students are studying for Diplomate of the National Board, New Delhi (D.N.B) in different disciplines(Anaesthesia, Radiodiagnosis and General Surgery).
The studies for Ph.D. are being carried out under specific guides /investigators for medical research with the approval of Institutional Ethics Committee.
Two-year courses for D.R.D. Tech (Diploma in Radiodiagnosis) and D.M.L.T (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology) under the State Medical Faculty of West Bengal started here from 1996 and 1997 respectively for which the curriculam have been throughly revised and regular theoretical and practical classes are being conducted. Presently the quota of intake are 8 and 15 students respectively.
4-year B.P.T (Bachelor of Physiotherapy) course under West Bengal University of Health Sciences is conducted here from 2006. The quota of intake is 10 students.
Bachelor of Critical Care Technology (BCCT) and Bachelor of Operation Theatre Technology (BOTT) courses under West Bengal University of Health Sciences were started here from September 2009. The quota of intake for each courses are 20 students each.
Nursing is a healthcare profession focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so that they may attain, maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life from birth to death and this calls for total dedication and a lot of sacrifice. The mission of Ma Sarada College of Nursing is to provide loyal, efficient and honest comprehensive nursing services for promotion of health and well-being of mankind without any distinction of caste, creed, religion, sex and nationality. Today, Nursing has become a dynamic profession worldwide. The newer and holistic concepts of health have brought newer challenges to Nursing and to meet these challenges and demands of the society, upgradation of nursing education to collegiate level becomes essential. Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan started Ma Sarada College of Nursing within its campus to fulfill this need.
The College is situated in Fatehpuria Block and Adhish Chandra Sinha Memorial Building inside the hospital premises. It provides a conducive atmosphere, credible learning opportunities, and quality grooming to those who want to pursue Nursing as a profession. It also encourages students to prepare themselves to become efficient nurses ready to serve the mankind anywhere in the world with competence and compassion.
Accreditation:
The programme is fully accredited by the Indian Nursing Council (August 2005). The College is under the affiliation of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences with effect from July 2005.
Duration of the course:
The course is four academic years. The first year is expected to commence from 1st October every year.
Number of seats:
Number of seats available for admission to the first year B.Sc. Nursing Course is 25 (twenty five).
Admission Procedure:
Candidates have to appear in Joint Entrance Examination (JENPAUH) and accordingly admission takes place through e-counselling and seat is allotted according to rank order.

Revision of Institutional rates:

Residential course. Accommodation will be provided according to the discretion of the Management. Students must abide by the Hostel & College rules and regulations.

About The Nursing School
The need for training a sufficient number of nurses can hardly be overemphasized. One of the chief objects of the Seva Pratishthan has been to provide facilities forewarning in nursing and midwifery in a suitable atmosphere. The institution had been training midwives since its inception in 1932 and it was recognised as a training centre for Junior and Senior Midwives in 1944. When the institution expanded into a General Hospital in 1956, the school was recognised for the raining of Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives, later known as Multipurpose Health Workers, and in the following year for General Nurse-Midwives as well. The school has the capacity for training about 150 students. The Government of West Bengal has been helping the School regularly and is bearing a substantial portion of the cost of training of about 100 General Nurse-Midwives.
College of Nursing: General Nursing - Midwifery Course
Aims:
The aim of Diploma in General Nursing & Midwifery course is to prepare nurses with a sound educational programme along with personality development and with professional efficiency so that they can contribute maximum to the society. We keep the course up to date with latest professional & technological developments in nursing care services.
Objectives:
On completion of the course, the Nurses will render their service to the sick and suffering, demonstrating competency in providing proper health care and nursing techniques effectively.
Teaching Faculty:
Principal, Vice Principal, Senior Tutors 5 to 6 nos., Tutor 15 to 16 nos., Clinical Instructor and additional tutor.
Facilities:
Three Class Rooms, Nursing Practice Laboratory, Community Practice Laboratory, Nutrition Laboratory & Computer Laboratory, Multipurpose Hall, Library etc.
We have many extracurricular activities like Inter School Competition in Music, Paintings etc., Saraswati Puja, and celebrations related to 15th August & 26th January respectively. “Student Nurses Association” conducts various competitions in which our school students participate.

First Year: Biological Science, Behavioural Science, Fundamentals of Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Rural & Urban Nursing, English.
Second Year: Medical & Surgical Nursing I + II, Mental Health, Psychiatric Nursing & Computer Education.
Third Year: Midwifery & Gynaecology, Community Health Nursing – II and Paediatric Nursing.
Internship: Educational Methods & Media, Introduction to Research, Professional Trends & adjustment, Health Economics.
School of Nursing: Admission Policy
Pupils are selected for the course after a written test, an interview and a medical check up.
After a course of instruction for three months, an examination is held and successful candidates take part in an impressive ceremony called Capping Ceremony after which they are given the NURSING CAP, a symbol of Nursing Service. At this ceremony they take vows, composed in lucid Sanskrit of life-long dedicated service to the sick and suffering.
Those who cannot pass the said examination are not eligible for continuing the training.
School of Nursing: Facilities
Pupils receive training in an atmosphere conducive to their all round development - physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual. Among the facilities are :
- a well-equipped demonstration room,
- a library with about 6,700 books and 4 periodicals,
- an auditorium
- a shrine and prayer hall.
- regular programme of in-service training for qualified nurses is conducted by the institution to improve and maintain a high standard to prepare them for higher courses. The nursing tutors and other members of the nursing staff are also encouraged to acquire higher professional qualifications.
- The Annual Swami Vivekananda Birth Centenary Memorial Ceompetition in music, painting, recitation and elocution for student nurses of West Bengal are held every year. Student Nurses from different Schools and Colleges of Nursing in and around Kolkata participate in the said competitions.
- Among the other cultural and religious functions held during the year are Saraswati Puja, Christmas Eve, Independence Day and Republic Day. These are celebrated with great aplomb, with impressive parades and folk dances, tableaus and patriotic songs as befitting the different occasions.
- A Scholarship Fund has been created out of donations received for awarding scholarships and prizes to student nurses of the institution.
